Derasat forum to focus on impact of energy transition in MENA region

Manama, The MENA region as a technological leader in green energy and the circular carbon economy (CCE) will figure high on the agenda of a symposium to be held next week in Bahrain.

The second Middle East and North Africa IAEE Symposium will be hosted by Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) in association with the fifth Derasat annual forum under the theme “The Impact of Energy Transition in the MENA Region.”

Other topics to be addressed by elite experts, speakers and researchers from more than 10 countries include advancing green energy in MENA, artificial intelligence and energy transition in the MENA region and green uses for fossil fuels in the sustainability era.

The sessions will focus on the MENA region’s current contribution to green energy and circular carbon economy research and development, including hydrogen as well as international policies and practices that support the CCE and how their impact on both environment and economy can be measured.

The nature of the fiscal and regulatory support given to green energies in the MENA region and the key barriers to the MENA region making a larger contribution will also be addressed.

Ways for artificial intelligence technologies to contribute to the transition to green energy in the MENA region, the major obstacles to taking advantage of artificial intelligence and the risks associated with using artificial intelligence will also be debated.

Questions that speakers will answer include to what extent is the prevailing energy mix the result of subsidies and legal support that is favorable to green energy, and if the societal benefits that green energies confer justify the cost of the fiscal and regulatory support that they are afforded.

Whether global competition gives governments an incentive to limit pro-green regulation as part of a regulatory race to the bottom will also be addressed.

“We are looking forward with great anticipation to the fifth “Derasat” forum that confirms its growth in the region and beyond,” Derasat Executive Director Dr. Hamad Ibrahim Al Abdullah said.

“The most prominent researchers and global thinkers in energy and its markets will gather to discuss regional ways for energy transition, and we expect important outputs and recommendations, along with multilateral benefits from the exchange of experiences and the consolidation of valuable partnerships.”
