The President receives Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator

Mogadishu The President of Federal Republic of Somalia H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received today at the Presidential Palace UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief (OCHA) Mr. Martin Griffiths.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud shared with Mr. Griffiths the plans of the Federal Government to deal with humanitarian related issues caused by the effects of drought in the country and parts of the Horn of Africa region, which requires joint cooperation work at the government level and at the international level.

The President pointed out that the people and the Somali government give priority to responding to the urgent needs of the community and programs based on long-term vision, to find a lasting solution to the recurring challenges such as drought and climate change, underlining that the focus should be placed at this time on how to base humanitarian aid, national job creation, investment, economic self-sufficiency and sustainable development.

In addition, The President praised the OCHA organization for their continuous support and assistance to the Somali people, and urged them to strengthen assistance to the people affected by the drought and to tackle the resulting humanitarian situations.

On his part, Mr. Griffiths said that OCHA will assist the Federal Government of Somalia with tackling priority issues regarding development and the efforts to deal with the widespread effects of climate change.
