The President and Prime Minister of Somalia have separately spoken out about the importance of justice in the country and their commitment to strengthening the justice system. In January 2023, speaking at the annual meeting of the country’s judiciary, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the importance of unifying the judiciary and implementing justice.
He noted that the Federal Government has taken important steps to empower the judiciary, including the approval of the process of Federalization of the Judiciary at the meetings of the Consultation Forum in Mogadishu.
The President urged the justice community to work hard to secure justice and avoid supporting oppressors, and called for the strengthening of the power and capacity of justice enforcement agencies.
He also emphasized the importance of peace and justice as the foundations of life and governance.
“The judge is independent. The Supreme Council of the Judicial Service should not be interfered with. We do not want two citizens with different rights to live in Somalia,” President Hassan Sheikh said.
Meanwhile, Yesterday at the 5th Annual Conference of Somali Prosecutors, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre called on the Somali community to report incidents of bribery and corruption and hold those found guilty accountable.
He also expressed concern about ongoing violence against Somali citizens, and instructed justice institutions to take measures to hold those responsible accountable. The conference concluded with a call for greater collaboration between justice institutions and civil society to ensure that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner.
“We must all work together to ensure that justice is served and the rule of law is upheld in Somalia. Corruption and violence have no place in our society, and we must hold those who engage in such activities accountable. It’s crucial and required that Somali Scholars educate the public about corruption.” said Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre.
The President and Prime Minister’s remarks highlight the importance of justice, and their commitment to upholding the law in Somalia. It is crucial that justice is served in a transparent and fair manner and that those responsible for acts of corruption and violence are held accountable.
Additionally, it is essential that justice enforcement agencies have the resources and power to effectively enforce the law and ensure justice is served. It is only through these measures that the Somali people can be assured of a safe and secure future.
