Special Envoy reaches UK and meets officials

London, The Special Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia for Drought Relief, H.E Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, arrived in London last night and held a meeting with the Special Envoy of the Horn of Africa for the British Government, Sarah Montgomery and other officials.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary for the Development of Humanitarian Aid, Nick Dye, the Foreign Ministry’s Office Head of Africa, Corin Robertson, and the Special Envoy for Climate Change, Nick Bridge, while other officials from the UK Embassy in Somalia attended virtually.

The envoy briefed the officials on the magnitude of the drought problem in Somalia, the work done so far and the challenges that exist, and urged the UK to increase its efforts for drought relief and how to suggest donors to jointly fight severe famine outbreak in Somalia.

The Envoy shared with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK, where the people’s uprising is going and the military successes against terrorism, which he described as a precursor to security stability in Somalia, and promised that the UK will continue to support Somalia to eradicate terrorist groups.

The Envoy also spoke privately with the UK Secretary of State’s Special Envoy on Climate Change, Nick Bridge, addressing climate change at the international level, and strengthening Somalia’s climate resilience through compensation-related finance on climate, local adaptation and Government capacity building.

The Envoy, who is in the process of meeting the Somali community living abroad, will hold a meeting with the Somali community living in England on October 9, 2022, to help those affected by the drought, similar to the meetings he had with the communities in North America in the United States and Canada.
